With extreme temperatures forecast, our waste and recycling crews will be starting their rounds earlier from Mon 6th to Fri 17th July to stay safe in the heat. Please put your bins out by 6am on your collection day.

The Returning Officer is now making arrangements for the by-election to be held on Thursday 20th August 2026.

Key information for electors 

For current electors, your official poll card containing information about the election is being sent to you by post and you should receive this soon. 

If you are not already a postal or proxy voter and you will be unable to attend your polling station on Thursday 20th August, you can apply to vote by post or proxy by the following deadlines:

Postal Vote: 5pm on Wednesday 5th August 2026 by clicking on www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote

Proxy Vote: 5pm on Wednesday 12th August 2026 by clicking on www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

If you have anyone resident at your address who is not already registered then they will need to apply, if they wish to vote at this election, by no later than Tuesday 4 August 2026.

Key information for candidates

The Returning Officer for Nottingham City Council will be holding an in-person briefing session for prospective Local election candidates.

When – Thursday 16th July 2026 at 6.00pm

Where – Ground Floor Committee Room, Loxley House, Station Street, NG2 3NG

Any prospective candidates and election agents wishing to attend, please email elections@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

There are three important documents that you must submit to make your nomination valid:

  • The nomination form
  • A home address form
  • Your consent to nominate

If you are standing for a registered political party, you will need two additional forms to allow you to use the party name or description and emblem.

  • Certificate of Authorisation
  • Party Emblem Request

Candidates are encouraged to submit their nomination form and supporting papers for informal checking by the Returning Officer at the earliest opportunity. 

Formal nominations must be delivered to the Returning Officer at Loxley House, Station Street, Nottingham, NG2 3NG between 9am and 4pm on any working day from 15th July 2026 but no later than 4pm on Friday 24th July 2026.

Election Agent:
Candidates must declare in writing the name, address and office address of the Election Agent to the Returning Officer no later than 4pm on Friday 24th July 2026. If no Election Agent is appointed, you will become your own agent by default.

Postal Voting Agents: 
Candidates can appoint postal voting agents.  The request must be made in writing to the Returning Officer and contain the names and addresses of the people being appointed. The request must be received prior to the start of the opening session they want to attend.

Polling & Counting Agents:
Candidates can appoint polling and counting agents. The request must be made in writing to the Returning Officer and contain the names and addresses of the people being appointed. Polling & Counting agents must be appointed by not later than Thursday 13th August 2026.

Election Agents must submit the candidates Election Expenses Return by not later than 35 days after the declaration of result. 

There is a limit on what you can spend on your campaign, which is £960 + 8p per each local government elector registered in the ward.

Expenses should be returned no later than Friday 25th September 2026.

You must still submit a return even if you haven’t spent any money. This is called a ‘nil return’.

Expenses will not be reimbursed – they are simply a record to confirm your expenditure and to check the limit was not exceeded.
