Building Control Officer

£40,777 – £44,075 (Grade H)

Contract Type: Permanent

Working Hours: 37 Hours per week

Worker Type: Mobile Worker with expectation of office attendance at least one day a week. 

Salary: Starting Salary is £40,777 (Level one) rising to £44,075 per annum (pro rata for part-time) (Pay award pending) - Pending Market Supplement taking Salary to £50,629 per annum

As a Building Control Officer, you’ll be at the heart of ensuring that new developments and construction projects meet the required building standards, protecting the safety, wellbeing, and interests of our communities. This is a varied and hands-on role where no two days are the same, from assessing plans and advising on complex regulations to visiting sites and seeing projects come to life.

You’ll work closely with architects, developers, and residents, providing expert guidance and building strong relationships to support successful project delivery. Alongside this, you’ll contribute to wider priorities such as accessibility, fire safety, and sustainability, helping to create a city that works for everyone.

We’re looking for someone who is technically confident, proactive, and passionate about delivering a high-quality service. You’ll be comfortable working independently while also collaborating as part of a supportive and forward-thinking team.

What you’ll be doing:

• Assessing building regulation applications and ensuring compliance with legislation
• Carrying out site inspections at key construction stages
• Providing clear, practical advice to a wide range of stakeholders
• Supporting enforcement activity where required
• Contributing to public safety, including work on dangerous structures and demolitions
• Keeping up to date with changes in legislation, construction methods, and best practice

Principal Building Control Surveyor

£56,730 – £60,125 (Grade K)
Progression through the grade based on experience and performance

Lead, influence, and shape the future of Building Control in Nottingham.

This is a key leadership role within our Building Control service, offering the opportunity to take the lead on complex, high-risk projects while helping to develop and support a high-performing team. As a Principal Building Control Surveyor, you will play a critical part in ensuring compliance, driving quality, and protecting public safety across some of the city’s most significant developments.

You’ll be trusted to manage complex cases, including high-rise and large public buildings, while also acting as a technical expert, mentor, and role model within the team. This is a role where your expertise, judgement, and leadership will directly influence both service delivery and outcomes for our communities.

What you’ll be doing:

• Leading on complex and high-risk building control projects
• Assessing plans and carrying out inspections to ensure compliance with legislation
• Managing dangerous structures and coordinating emergency responses
• Providing technical guidance and mentoring to colleagues
• Supporting commercial activity, including client relationships and fee setting
• Leading enforcement action and representing the service in legal proceedings
• Deputising for the Building Control Manager when required

What we’re looking for:

• Strong, in-depth knowledge of Building Regulations and associated legislation
• Proven experience working on complex or high-risk developments
• Excellent analytical and technical decision-making skills
• Leadership capability, with the ability to support and develop others
• Strong communication skills, including stakeholder and client engagement
• A proactive and innovative mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
