Types of Graves

Lawn Graves

The plot comes with a grass cover and the choice of adding a headstone. Burials are conducted within the grassy sections of both the Northern and Southern Cemeteries. While High Wood Cemetery lacks a designated grassy grave area, it is possible to acquire a lawned grave. A headstone may be placed on a lawn grave, but the grassy area itself must remain clear of any objects.

Do

  • After a burial, the only items allowed to be placed on the grave are fresh floral tributes.
  • Temporary markers are supplied by NCC for the first interment only, these are to be placed at the head end of the grave and are to be removed when a permanent memorial has been fitted such
    as a headstone.
  • Temporary mason’s markers are allowed which must be supplied by a stonemason, a permit will be required before the marker can be fitted.
  • Headstones, plaques, vases, or tablets may only be fitted through an application (permit) via an approved stonemason, details available from the Cemetery Office or online.
  • Any items left on the grassed areas will be cleared and disposed of without notice.

Don't

  • All DIY surrounds such as wood, brick, plastic, metal, and wire fences.
  • All artificial grass / turf and flowers Stones, slate, chippings, wood chippings or gravel
  • No planting of any flora such as plants, shrubs, flowers, or trees
  • All other items, including lanterns, lights, any glass items, trinkets, wind chimes, vases, soft toys, flags etc. 

Traditional Graves

These burials will take place within a certain area of Northern and Southern Cemeteries. High Wood Cemetery does not have a specific area for traditional graves, but a traditional grave can be purchased. On a traditional grave, a memorial in the form of a kerb set and headstone is permitted.

Types of Burial

These are the standard types of burials available.

Green Burial

These burials take place in the meadowland at High Wood Cemetery. This meadowland is cut twice a year. A biodegradable coffin must be used and no embalming of the body can take place. Memorials and headstones are not be permitted on the grave.

Woodland Burial

These burials take place in the areas where coppices or woodland areas are being created. As with Green burials, a biodegradable coffin must be used and no embalming of the body can take place. A tree will be planted next to the grave, but memorials and headstones are not permitted on the grave

Interment of Cremated remains

Cremated remains can be interned on a grave or in an underground niche. If a grave is to be used it can be a cremated remains grave, or the internment can take place in a grave already purchased and used for burials. A grave can hold approximately eight sets of cremated remains. An underground niche can be purchased and two sets of remains can be accommodated With the underground niche, a black granite plaque with the first inscription and vase is included in the initial price.
