To support this, we use a combination of Signs of Safety, Restorative Practice, and Trauma-Aware Practice as the foundation of our work. These models help us build strong, respectful relationships, understand the lived experiences of those we work with, and create plans that are both realistic and meaningful. By integrating these approaches, we promote strengths-based, inclusive, and responsive practice which meets the needs of each individual and family.
Our Learning Academy plays a key role in embedding these practice models across our workforce. It provides a structured space for continuous professional development, reflective learning, and peer support. Through training, coaching, and collaborative learning opportunities, the academy helps to build confidence, consistency, and curiosity in practice—ensuring that our teams are well-equipped to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families.

What our staff say
Hear from our Children’s Residential Care Workers about what it’s really like to work in Nottingham.
“My job can be extremely rewarding, building positive relationships with young people and their families while working closely with other agencies. I help put positive plans and interventions in place to support families and prevent breakdown. What’s especially rewarding is hearing from families who tell us they’ve been able to recharge while their child is with us, or spend quality time with other children. Seeing young people grow in confidence, independence and life skills is truly amazing.”

“Our staff team works really well together and many of us have been here for years. We consistently go above and beyond to support children and families, and parents often describe us as ‘just like family’. When young people come to us for short breaks, families say it feels like dropping them off with grandparents or close relatives. New staff are always supported, with someone on hand to help and guide them as they settle into their role.”

“I’ve worked full time for Nottingham City Council as a Children’s Residential Social Care Worker for four years. In my daily practice, I not only support young people to become confident, well-rounded individuals, but I’m also inspired by them. My role allows me to use strong communication skills, listen to children’s wishes and feelings, and be an active part of a supportive team. I feel empowered to share my views and grow professionally, and every day is different and rewarding.”

“I enjoy working in residential care because it really feels like a home from home. I love creating positive experiences for young people, especially those they may not have had before. The role is flexible, fits around home commitments and brings new challenges every day, helping me grow both professionally and personally. Strong relationships with colleagues are key, and having each other’s backs makes a real difference. You need to be passionate, resilient and, most importantly, care.”
