Have your say on proposed changes to Council Tax Support |

Nottingham City Council is consulting on future options for its Council Tax Support scheme which helps households on low incomes with their Council Tax bill.

We want to help landlords to benefit everyone because it’s about improving behaviour, and we want to work with people to achieve this. We know that sometimes it’s not easy for a landlord to tackle these issues and help with practical solutions.

Landlords in Nottingham should take steps to prevent and reduce anti-social behaviour from their tenants.

It’s one of the conditions of having a licence to rent properties.

Tenant behaviour and what a landlord does about it will affect future licence applications. Not acting shouldn’t ever be an option.

Anti-Social Behaviour

It’s anything that’s being done by tenants or their guests which negatively impacts neighbours or the community in general.

Things such as excessive noise in the early hours, large parties, piles of rubbish, fly-tipping, or graffiti can all count, and we aim to see this sort of behaviour reduced and stopped.

It’s not just about evicting people. It’s about taking responsibility for how tenants behave in a property rented to them by a landlord.

We work closely with the City’s Community Protection Officers and the ASB team, and we can let landlords know what they find out about tenants, but it is up to landlords to act to improve the situation.

Things that can help

  • Always get references from a previous landlord before renting to someone but be aware of the limitations of this – it’s no guarantee of future (or past) behaviour
  • Financial referencing might help – previous bank statements or credit checks, for example
  • Making sure the tenancy agreement has clear rules about behaviour – and telling tenants about this when they sign up
  • Talking to tenants when issues come up
  • If necessary, give a written warning
  • Get advice from us, the ASB team, or even the Police. If it’s a student let, from the University
  • Consider serving a Notice if it is a breach of contract
