Women’s Aid defines domestic abuse as:

“An incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer. It is very common. In the vast majority of cases, it is experienced by women and is perpetrated by men”.

Domestic abuse can include, but is not limited to, the following:

• Coercive control (a pattern of intimidation, degradation, isolation and control with the use or threat of physical or sexual violence)
• Psychological and/or emotional abuse
• Physical or sexual abuse
• Financial or economic abuse
• Harassment and stalking
• Online or digital abuse

How we can help

The first step is for you to call or visit us to discuss your situation. You will then be invited to an appointment with a Housing Casework Officer to determine what help the Council can provide, including whether you will qualify for emergency accommodation. As part of this, we will complete a Full Housing and Support Needs Assessment. We are co-located with Juno Women’s Aid and Equation at Loxley House, so can assist you to access specialist domestic abuse support if you would like to.

We treat survivors with dignity and sensitivity and take all reports of domestic abuse seriously. Housing Solutions staff have completed J9 training, so are empathetic and non-judgemental to any disclosures of abuse.

You can request a male or female Housing Casework Officer, and we have a Housing Casework Officer – DA Specialist who can offer you guidance and support and can assist with safety planning. We can also offer appointments in a safe location to suit you (e.g., your doctor’s surgery or community centre).

We will carry out a risk assessment using a Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Honour Based Abuse Risk Identification Checklist (DASH). This is a UK wide accredited form used by us and partner organisations to plan how we will support those experiencing abuse. It helps us to understand the levels of risk you may be experiencing.

If you wish to remain in your home, we also offer the Sanctuary Scheme. This scheme aims to prevent survivors of domestic abuse becoming homeless by assisting them to remain in their home safely through the provision of additional security measures to their property.
