A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) can help pay for adaptations to your home if you or someone living with you is disabled or has a long-term health condition. The aim of the grant is to help people live safely and independently at home.
The grant can help pay for adaptations such as;
- Level access showers and easy access showers
- Stairlifts
- Ramps and improved access
- Home extensions
- Specialist equipment and assistive technology
The maximum grant available in Nottingham is £50,000.
We charge a fee to manage adaptation works. If you qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant, this fee can usually be included in the grant.

Eligibility is based on:
- Your assessed need for an adaptation
- Your financial circumstances (for adult applications)
Assessment of need
An Occupational Therapist (OT) will assess your needs. If they identify that a major adaptation is required, you may be referred to the Adaptations and Renewals Agency to apply for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
Financial assessment
Adult applications are subject to a financial assessment (known as a means test). The means test looks at your income and savings to work out whether you need to contribute towards the cost of the adaptation. Applications for children are not subject to a means test.
The Adapt My Home Website has helpful information to help people understand if they might qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant and their Means Test calculator will provide an estimate of whether you might need to contribute towards the cost of your adaptation.
Nottingham City Council reduces the amount residents need to pay by disregarding the first £10,000 of any assessed contribution calculated by the standard DFG Means Test.
What this means for you
- If your assessed contribution is £10,000 or less, you will not have to pay anything.
- If your assessed contribution is more than £10,000, you will only pay the amount above £10,000.
For example, if your adaptation costs £9,000:
