This section brings together key documents that outline how we deliver planning and building control services in Nottingham. Here you’ll find information about our service standards, priorities, and the actions we’re taking to support sustainable development and high-quality outcomes for the city. These resources set out our approach to customer service, enforcement, and continuous improvement, helping you understand what to expect and how we work in partnership with residents, businesses, and developers.

In 2025, Nottingham City Council invited the Planning Advisory Service (PAS), supported by the Local Government Association (LGA), to carry out a peer review of our planning service. The review assessed how well we deliver our statutory planning duties and support the city’s wider ambitions for growth, regeneration, and sustainable development. It looked at key areas such as leadership, performance, community engagement, partnership working, and the operation of the Planning Committee.

The peer review provided valuable feedback and a series of recommendations to help us modernise processes, strengthen resilience, and position planning as a driver of economic growth. In response, we have developed an Action Plan that sets out how we will implement these recommendations. This plan is updated quarterly to ensure transparency and track progress as we continue to improve our service.

Our Customer Charter sets out the standards you can expect when engaging with Nottingham City Council’s Planning Services. It explains our commitment to providing a responsive, transparent, and inclusive service that supports sustainable development and high-quality outcomes for the city. The Charter also outlines what we ask of our customers to help us deliver the best possible service, along with key service standards for planning applications, enforcement, and appeals.

The Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) sets out how Nottingham City Council will involve local communities, stakeholders and statutory consultees in planning. In relation to development management, it explains how and when people can be involved in the consideration of planning applications, and the minimum standards the Council will follow when consulting on development proposals.

The SCI forms part of the planning framework and applies to all planning applications determined by the City Council. It ensures that consultation is transparent, proportionate and legally compliant, while also reflecting the Council’s wider commitment to meaningful engagement with communities wherever possible.
