About our Organisation
Nottingham Mencap, a self-funded local charity with 70 years of advocacy for people with learning disabilities, autism and vulnerable people in our community. We adopt a person-centred approach, listening to people’s needs and treating everyone with dignity and respect. We develop the skills and confidence of the people we work with enabling them to live as independently as possible. In addition, we act as a source of information and support for our people, their families and the people who care for them. In addition, we campaign to raise awareness within our community to promote equality and understanding.
About our UKSPF Project
Empowering Communities Through Technology: Bridging the Digital Divide
We will be working across the city from Summer 2025 to support vulnerable and technologically excluded individuals by working with people where they live and access essential services. By fostering confidence in technology use, we aim to empower participants to enhance their quality of life and achieve key milestones.
True progression into education and employment is only possible when individuals have access to health services, community networks, and essential resources such as banking and statutory services. Many courses currently on offer start at a point that many people cannot access. We will work with this group to prepare them for more formal educational opportunities.
We will focus on improving participants’ access to:
- Health Services – Facilitating the use of the NHS App and fostering connections with NHS partners to enhance healthcare accessibility.
- Community Engagement – Strengthening links to peer support groups, mental health services, and recovery programs to foster belonging and resilience.
- Day-to-Day Life Management – Assisting with online banking, job-seeking resources, and access to advice centres, ensuring individuals can navigate essential services with confidence.
