Name of Organisation: Sequence: Nottingham Centre for Photography and Social Engagement
Short Description of Organisation
We are a Midlands-based social enterprise providing accessible facilities, education, and community support for photographers. Founded in 2019, the Nottingham Centre for Photography and Social Engagement helps individuals excluded from formal photography routes due to financial barriers, life circumstances, or age.
We focus on removing obstacles and building creative confidence among diverse groups, including young people, career changers, and lifelong learners. Our affordable or free workshops, talks, exhibitions, and resource-sharing scheme enable inclusive participation. Monthly social events foster peer learning and community, with a dedicated group for women photographers to promote inclusion and visibility. We champion engagement, learning, and volunteering.
Summary of planned improvemments
The Nottingham Centre for Photography and Social Engagement is transforming its new venue into an accessible, modern hub for photography and community activity. Planned improvements include building two fully equipped darkrooms for black-and-white and colour printing, allowing more people to learn and practice analogue techniques. A flexible teaching and social space will host diverse workshops, intergenerational skill-sharing, and creative wellbeing sessions, adapting to a range of community needs.
A quiet photography library and resource zone will provide a calm environment for self-directed learning, research, and mental health-focused activities. The venue will also undergo upgrades to improve accessibility for people with mobility challenges and to reduce energy use through efficient LED lighting and mechanical ventilation.
These enhancements will significantly increase the range and frequency of activities available to local residents. More people will gain access to high-quality photography facilities and expert-led workshops at low or no cost, breaking down barriers for those excluded from traditional education routes. The new spaces will foster social connections, creativity, and wellbeing across all ages and backgrounds.
Overall, this revitalised centre will become a vibrant community asset—supporting skills development, volunteering, exhibitions, and public events—while contributing to Nottingham’s cultural life and delivering sustainable, inclusive benefits for local people.
