About our Organisation
Himmah is a Nottingham-based social justice charity addressing food poverty, racism, and inequality. With strong local roots, Himmah engages diverse communities through participatory projects. Its upcoming community engagement activity is a four-month creative programme supporting victims of anti-Muslim and race hate crime.
The project will offer weekly arts workshops, communal meals, guest artist sessions, and a public exhibition showcasing participants’ stories and heritage. Through creative expression, intergenerational dialogue, and inclusive events held in community venues, the project aims to reduce isolation, foster cohesion, and celebrate Nottingham’s diverse cultures—empowering marginalised voices and increasing engagement with local facilities.
Summary of events and activities to be delivered
The planned project will deliver a four-month creative engagement programme aimed at supporting victims of anti-Muslim and race hate crime in Nottingham. Through 12 weekly arts workshops, participants will explore their heritage and lived experiences, building confidence, creative skills, and social connections. Each session will include communal meals to foster trust and reduce isolation. Participants will co-create a public exhibition and printed catalogue, amplifying their voices and celebrating the city’s cultural diversity.
The programme will be hosted in accessible community venues, encouraging wider use of local facilities and promoting inclusion. Guest artists and peer-led critique sessions will support skill development, while volunteers from Himmah’s wider network will gain experience in arts facilitation and community engagement. The final exhibition and events will offer a platform for intercultural dialogue and shared understanding across communities.
This project will improve mental well-being, increase civic participation, and provide a safe space for marginalised individuals to express themselves and connect with others. The legacy will include publicly accessible resources—such as a short video and school-friendly materials—helping to build lasting awareness and appreciation of Nottingham’s diverse communities. These improvements contribute directly to community resilience, cultural visibility, and a more inclusive civic landscape.
