Online Early Years Child Development Training

The Department for Education has launched a free online Early Years Child Development Training Course aimed at childminders, nursery practitioners and nursery managers.  This online programme is designed to help practitioners improve their knowledge and understanding of child development, offering practical advice, theory and tips, so that they can support children in early education settings.

This flexible online training has been developed in consultation with early years experts and provides a greater understanding of child development, building on the reforms to the EYFS Statutory Framework and supporting the aim of improving outcomes for children at the age of 5.

The training:

  • gives practical advice for supporting babies and children in early years settings
  • includes opportunities to reflect on your practice
  • reinforces your understanding through videos, learning check questions and short, end of module tests
  • allows you to pause and restart the training at any time and now start the modules in any order (although completing them in consecutive order is recommended as the training has been designed to build on previous modules)
  • offers the chance to download certificates of achievement for each module

Users will work through 8 online interactive modules related to child development, each taking around 2 hours to complete.

The new module 'Effective Curriculum and Assessment' has just been added (May 2024) and the final module 'Supporting Individual Differences and Needs' is in development and will be added shortly.

Providers can access the training at any time to suit them and work through the modules at their own pace by going to https://child-development-training.education.gov.uk
