Background
Nottingham is home to over 900 caves carved into the sandstone beneath the city. Nottingham has more caves than any other city in Europe. The city’s caves have been central to its identity since the 9th century and have been used for many different purposes including cellars, dungeons, catacombs, tanneries and air raid shelters.
These caves are of national archaeological and historical significance, contributing to Nottingham’s unique identity and heritage.
They are protected under Policy HE2: Caves in the Nottingham Local Plan and supported by the Management of the Caves Supplementary Planning Guidance and Technical Guide (2025).
Caves are found beneath:
- Historic buildings (e.g. Castle Quarter, Broadmarsh)
- Public spaces and private properties
- Commercial premises (some reused as bars, venues, or storage)
Use the Interactive Cave Map to explore known cave locations.
The Council monitors:
- Cave condition and risk
- Development proposals affecting caves
- Opportunities for reuse and public access
If your site includes or is near caves, you may need:
- Planning permission
- Listed building consent
