Local Access Forum

The Nottingham Local Access Forum (LAF) is an independent advisory body set up in 2004 under Section 94 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. LAF Members are appointed by the City Councils Highway Authority as volunteers and all have a passion for improving public rights of way and public access on foot, cycle and horse across Nottingham and the surrounding areas. Local Access Forums’ are very well placed to influence local decisions affecting public rights of way, public access and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The Forum holds four meetings a year and members represent Nottingham at local and national events and attend site meetings when required. The NLAF have a number of sub groups covering planning applications and development and how this may affect or improve public access, a walking sub group who are developing a series of self-guided walk leaflets and one covering the Definitive Map, the legal record of public rights of way in Nottingham. Additionally, the Forum responds to national consultations and advises the Council and other relevant bodies on public rights of way and public access.

Examples of LAF Work

Self-Guided Walk Leaflets: Two of the City Councils priorities are to promote a "healthy Nottingham" and to improve the quality of life of its citizens. Since 2011, the Forum has produced 3 self-guided walk leaflets promoting walking routes, public rights of way and local history. To view the leaflets and other walking destinations across Nottingham visit the "Walking in Nottingham" webpage.

Rights of Way Improvement Plans (ROWIP 1 & 2)

The forum was instrumental in helping the Council to prepare and publish the Rights of Way Improvement Plan and to implement its policies, where necessary holding the Council to account on its performance. Please click here for rights of way improvement plans.

Guide to Public Rights of Way, Planning and Development

As a direct result of the ROWIP, the Council produced this easy to follow guide for all those involved in public rights of way, planners, developers and architects.

Policy on the use of barriers on public rights of way

Another direct result of the ROWIP. This explains the Councils position on dealing with motorcycles on the network while keeping it accessible and safe for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
