Autism Awareness Resources

Nottingham City Council’s vision is for all autistic people to have equal opportunities regardless of their cultural background, gender or age, to live fulfilling and rewarding lives and for there to be a recognition that for citizens with autistic spectrum conditions “One Size Fits One”.

Did you know:

  • There are over 2,600 autistic adults in Nottingham city
  • Approximately 700,000 Autistic people live in the UK. Together with their families, they make up around 2.8 million people whose lives are touched by autism every single day

Autism Awareness E-learning programme

Nottingham City Council is developing a training programme to raise awareness of Autism and challenge the stereotypes that still exist. This will form part of a larger training programme aimed at people whose job may bring them into contact with Autistic people.

E-learning package

The foundation of the training is an E-learning package which was designed in partnership with autistic people, and professionals from Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Through the E-learning, you can expect to learn about the characteristics of autism, relevant legislation and practical ways of supporting autistic people.

The E-Learning is available in two formats; in the Learning Pool Learning Management System for agencies who have access to this and a PowerPoint version for those who do not.

The PowerPoint version is also open to members of the public who may have an interest in Autism.

Hidden Voices

Hidden Voices is a film about autistic people and family carers talk openly about their experiences of living with autism and their hopes and dreams for Nottingham's Autism Strategy.

Nottingham autistic community website

Nottingham City Council supports the Nottingham Autistic Community website which is a resource dedicated for autistic people and families in Nottingham City. The website has been designed by autistic people and provides a range of information, advice and links to other resources.

Nottinghamshire’s new Autism Information and Advice Service

Citizens Advice Nottingham operate a free information and advice service for those who are 16+ and who do not currently have a formal diagnosis of autism. Our goal is to provide timely and accessible information about support services available to anyone who is currently awaiting an autism diagnosis in Nottinghamshire County and Nottingham City

Nottingham City Council launched its Autism Strategy ‘One Size Fits One’ in 2014

Using funding made available through the Department of Health, the Nottingham City Strategy Oversight Group agreed with the creation of a number of short instructional films to be produced by and for Autistic people.

Think Autism: Communicating in the Public Sector Video

As a result, 7 short films. The films include real-life situations and Autistic Citizens have been involved with all elements including writing the scripts and appearing in the films.
