Children's Library Services

From tots to teens, your local library has something to offer all children and young people. We've got books to read, enjoy and learn from and activities like author visits and loads of fun school holiday events

Children can have their own library card from the day they are born, it's free to join and to borrow books and you can't start too soon! Studies have shown that just 10 minutes reading a day can dramatically improve your child's lifelong language, literacy and numeracy skills.  

Reading, Learning and Activities for Children of All Ages

All City Libraries have a wide range of children's books available to borrow and enjoy, they can all be reserved and renewed online. Each library also has a children's area full of inspiration for young readers plus toys and activities for families to share and enjoy. 

For older children there are teen areas in most libraries and young people have helped to choose books for their age groups. Our collection of Manga is very popular.

Coming up Soon

New Coding Sessions for Children aged 8+

Unlock the mysteries of coding over 6 weeks, learning the basics of computer coding using the BBC Microbit and seeing the results in LED!

Starting on Thursday 8 February, you will need to attend further dates on 15 February, 1 March, 8 March, 15 March and 22 Mar. Accompanying parent/carers welcome.

Sessions run 4pm to 5pm at Hyson Green Library

Learn to Love Books Together

Have fun and learn to love books together with our Storytelling and Play five week course (aimed at 1 to 2 year olds), run by Bulwell Homestart.

Starting on Friday 19 January, running every Friday until 16 February, 10am to 11:30am at Bulwell Riverside Library.

The Festival of Science and Curiosity

For one week every February, the festival brings creative and inspiring science, technology, engineering and maths based events and activities to the heart of Nottingham.  

Nottingham libraries are taking part and activities include

  • Curiosity Corner – engage your curiosity with fun activities
  • Chemistry Experiments – including Elephant’s Toothpaste and the ‘Pepper Trick’
  • Make and Take – make your own neurons and brain hats
  • Night from the Museum – get hands on with Wollaton Hall’s taxidermy collection and activities about animals’ sleep patterns
  • Maths Games – lateral thinking games with ropes

19 February, Bilborough Library, 10am to 3pm

20 February, Bulwell Riverside Library, 10am to 3pm

21 February, The Dales Centre, 10am to 3pm

All activities are free and open to all. No need to book.
