Skills training for families and people with no formal qualifications

The Community & Family Learning project:

  • Supports Nottingham City Council’s commitment to reduce unemployment, and aspiration to increase the skills levels of Nottingham residents.
  • Plays a valuable role in engaging individuals who have low, or no formal qualifications, are under skilled or are furthest away from the labour market.

Community & Family Learning offers learning packages which:

  • Improve personal confidence for parents and children
  • Raise aspirations
  • Improve social outcomes
  • Help people gain the skills to prepare for work
  • Are designed for parents with low skills who would not ordinarily attend a course
  • Re-engages parents with low skills into learning

Our Family Learning courses are designed to:

  • Inspire adults who want to come back to learning and provide social contact and confidence to succeed in developing new skills.
  • Offer a really wide range of community-run courses for people of all ages who want to acquire new skills, improve their chances to find work or gain a higher level job.

Our courses will help you to:

  • Improve your health and wellbeing
  • Gain practical digital skills
  • Improve your maths or language skills
  • Prepare yourself for work

Learning always takes place in a safe and supportive environment to ensure you feel comfortable and confident to express yourself. You will be actively supported throughout your learning journey and offered guidance on education and career progression opportunities.

It takes confidence to support your child’s learning, but evidence shows that when parents, carers and other family members are more involved, the child achieves more.

Our Family Learning courses are designed to:

  • Help parents and carers build confidence by understanding how children learn and develop.
  • Provide a route back into education for adults wanting to improve their own English, maths and digital skills.
  • Be a great way to make new friends, share experiences and improve your learning.

Your Family Learning tutor will always try to make your learning experience fun and informative, with many activities relating to everyday experiences. Whatever age your child or children are, Family Learning courses will support your child’s:

We also offer additional support and crèche provision at no extra cost.

Family and community Learning is funded by the Education Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) and organised by Nottingham City Council. Nottingham City Council contract with local providers and groups to deliver the courses. Learning can be formal and informal, within the community or school settings.
