Effective recycling helps protect the area you live and tackle climate change. Use this information on how to recycle effectively to ensure your bin is always collected and is never contaminated with the wrong items.
Recycling
Many items can be put into your mixed recycling bin, just make sure they are empty, rinsed and dry before putting them in your recycling bin.
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic tubs & trays
- Cardboard packaging
- Mixed paper
- Metal food tins
- Metal drinks cans
- Glass bottles & Jars
Things to remember
Clean. Dry. Loose.
Please make sure any items you are recycling are clean and dry. Place these items loose into your bin (not in a plastic bag). If your recycling bin contains bagged waste we will not be able to collect it.
Don't have a recycling bin?
You can order a recycling bin online or over the phone via our customer hub. If you live in rented accommodation you can order your own bin or speak to your landlord about ordering one for you.
If in doubt, leave it out!
Please make sure you DO NOT put the below items into your recycling bin:
- Foil lined cartons
- Greasy pizza & Takeaway boxes
- Textiles or clothing
- Bagged Waste
- Electrical items
Items that are commonly put in the recycling bin that should NOT be there?
Nottingham City Council bin crews commonly find these items in the recycling bin when they do not belong there. When non-recyclable material ends up in the recycling bin it is called contamination.
Contamination makes sorting recycling incredibly expensive and difficult. It not only reduces the quality of the recycling in the whole bin truck it also harms the environment and costs the tax payer.
Takeaway pizza boxes are NOT recyclable. This is because they are contaminated with food grease and waste.
Pyrex and other types of dinnerware or lightbulbs are NOT recyclable. This is because they contain different chemicals to make them resistant to heat and continuous use.
Tin foil and cling film are NOT recyclable.
Wallpaper and other household decorating items are NOT recyclable.
