The Competition - Square One
< The History of Nottingham's Old Market Square
Square One was a major two stage international competition. We invited experienced, design-led, professional companies to submit proposals for Square One; the re-design and regeneration of Nottingham's Old Market Square.
Renewing Nottingham's Old Market Square has been one of Nottingham City Council's most important regeneration schemes. We have one of the largest public spaces in Britain. Our ambitions are for a square that's one of the greatest in Europe and the wider world - and to be recognised for it. To do that we asked the best architects and public realm designers to work, with us to make this ambition a reality.
The Old Market Square is not a static space. It is a place of entertainment and public gathering and is very heavily used by shoppers and pedestrians. The opening of Nottingham's new tram in 2004 has made it a key public transport hub. The winning design had to accomodate all of this.
Over 60 first rate Design Teams from Britain, Europe and America entered Square One. These design teams were made up of architects, landscape architects, urban designers, civil, structural and lighting engineers and artists. Entries were received from the USA, Canada, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Holland and Belgium, as well as the UK. Many had strong track records of creating excellent public and civic spaces in major cities in Britain and across the world.
Six finalists were shortlisted and were invited to submit their final proposals and in 2004, Gustafson Porter was chosen as the compeition winner.
