What is the Homelessness Prevention Gateway?
The Homelessness Prevention Gateway helps people in Nottingham who have housing problems. We aim to help people avoid becoming homeless. Where homelessness cannot be prevented, we make a full assessment of individual support and accommodation needs to that appropriate services can be provided. The Gateway aims to make sure that vulnerable people are supported so that they are less likely to become homeless again in the future.
Who does the Gateway help?
The Gateway helps people in Nottingham who are currently homeless or who have housing problems and are at risk of becoming homeless.
How do I contact the Gateway?
There are several ways you can contact the Gateway team. The Gateway is based at Nottingham City Council’s Housing Aid centre and you can either telephone the office or come and see someone (an appointment service is available).
We are based at:
Housing Aid
135 Lower Parliament Street
Nottingham
NG1 1EE
Tel: 0115 915 3000
Email: gateway@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
Someone from a day centre, advice agency or hostel can also contact the Gateway team on your behalf. If you are unable to leave your home we can arrange for someone to visit you.
How does the Gateway work?
The first thing that will happen is to complete a simple needs assessment. You are likely to be asked some personal question as this information is needed to help us to provide the best support to you. It will also mean that if you contact the Gateway team in the future, you will not have to give us your information all over again.
If you have ongoing support needs, then we will make arrangements to complete a more detailed needs assessment. To do this we will work with other support agencies that may already be helping you. This will help us to produce an individual housing and support plan that is built around your personal needs and circumstances. As your situation changes, the plan will be looked at again and updated. Throughout all the processes, you will be involved and be able to have your say about the services that can be offered to you.
What if I have no accommodation tonight?
The Gateway will make every effort to make sure some kind of accommodation is there for you. If that is not possible, we will keep on working with you until your housing problem is solved. You may qualify for other emergency housing from Nottingham City Council as a vulnerable homeless person. If so, Housing Aid and the Gateway team will provide this for you.
What if I have particular needs that normal accommodation services can’t deal with?
If you need specific support, for example if you have a drugs or alcohol problem, or if you need support with a mental illness, we will do our best to make sure you can get into the right supported housing as soon as a place becomes available for you.
Rehousing
The Gateway will work with Housing Aid (our main homeless service) to make sure you are informed about housing choices to help you gain permanent accommodation. This will include making sure that you are on the waiting list with housing associations and Nottingham City Homes through HomeLink and exploring other options including private landlords.
Homelink and Gateway
We will help you bid for properties under the HomeLink process. There is free internet access to Homelink, Nottingham’s choice based lettings scheme, in Housing Aid’s reception. If you are in supported accommodation or a hostel, once you are ready to move to your own accommodation, the Gateway team and your key worker will make sure that you get support to bid for properties advertised on Homelink. For more information, please see the Nottingham Homelink leaflet.
Opening Times:
The Gateway service is open Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm, except for Wednesdays when we are open 10.30am – 4.30pm
If you become homeless outside of these hours, please call 0115 915 3000.
