Smoking and Your Business

Nottingham City Council is committed to supporting local businesses to reduce the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco use.

Smokefree legislation

Since 1 July 2007, all workplaces and enclosed public places within Nottingham have a legal obligation to be smoke free. This legislation has been introduced to reduce the harmful effect that second hand smoke has on the health of the population. For more information on the new law and how it could affect your business, please visit Smokefree England – see Useful Links. Smokefree Nottinghamshire has developed a Smokefree Implementation Pack to support local organisations – see Business factsheets.

‘Gold Standard’ smoking policies

Nottingham City Council is encouraging all Nottingham businesses to implement ‘Gold Standard’ smoking policies. These policies go a step further than Smokefree legislation and could have significant financial benefits to your organisation, as well as improving the health of your workforce – see Business factsheets.

Workplace stop smoking clinics

Nottingham City Council may be able to run FREE stop smoking sessions in your workplace. As well as giving information on how to obtain nicotine replacement therapy, such as nicotine patches, on prescription, our specialist Stop Smoking Advisors offer advice and encouragement during employees’ quit attempts.

Help to stop smoking

Nottingham’s NHS Stop Smoking Service, New Leaf, can provide free support and advice on how to quit smoking. They run clinics in over 70 locations across Nottingham and their trained advisors will be able to tailor a quit package to your specific needs. Contact New Leaf on 0800 561 2121 for support to stop smoking today.

For more information on any of these issues please contact James Thomas on 0115 915 6446 or at smokefree@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
