The Play Service supports and develops play for children across the City. There
are four main parts of this service:
- Grant Aid to community and voluntary organisations who provide play opportunities
for children. These include holiday play schemes, after school clubs, camps, play groups and play days.
For more information contact your local Play development Worker.
- Play Centres in five areas of the city, where children aged 5-14 can play after school,
on Saturdays or in the holidays. They learn how to make things, try out new activities and learn about
each other. These Centres have permanent paid staff, trained to work creatively with children and help
to reduce bullying, racism and anti-social behaviour.
- Play Development Workers in each area, support volunteers, organise training, access resources
and help develop and sustain good quality play opportunities in local communities.
- Play Projects can be found in all areas of the city providing play opportunities for children
on one or more days per week. Work is targeted towards children who lack opportunities to play
elsewhere.
All children, whatever age, need to play.
They need the time to do it, safe places to play in, resources to enhance play activities, and the encouragement
and empowerment to be creative and imaginative in their activities.
