LinkThe Turning Point scheme was an £11.7 million Government funded project which saw Milton Street and part of Parliament Street in the heart of Nottingham city centre transformed from traffic choked routes into a pedestrian friendly area for authorised traffic only such as; buses, blue badge holders, hackney carriages, private hire vehicles, access for loading / unloading and to off-street car parks.
Since general traffic was removed from Milton Street and part of Parliament Street in July 2005, traffic on these routes, which form the Turning Point restricted access zone, has been reduced by up to 90% (excluding buses) compared with figures from 2001.
From 8th October 2006 for up to 18 months an ‘experimental traffic order’ is in place to make the Turning Point restrictions easier to understand and enforce while still allowing access to the Turning Point zone for authorised traffic.
From this date, two of the three entry points into the Turning Point restricted access zone have been changed so that only buses, licensed hackney carriages, cyclists and the emergency services are able to enter the restricted zone at these two points*. These are at the junction of Lower Parliament Street and Broad Street and at the junction Mansfield Road / Shakespeare Street into Milton Street (*access to the Hilton Hotel will still be available at the Milton Street entry point).
Other authorised traffic which needs to access the Turning Point zone is still able to do so via Upper Parliament Street at its junction with South Sherwood Street, near Langtrys pub.
