Residents Parking Schemes

Why Do We Need Them?

Residents Parking Schemes are intended to protect on-street parking spaces for the people who live in the respective areas. In response to increased parking charges in the city centre, there has been a tendency for commuters to park in the local neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city centre. Residents Parking Schemes prevent the use of defined spaces by anyone who does not have a Resident's or a Visitor's parking permit.

Types of Permits

Resident Permits
Anyone who can prove they are a resident within a scheme area and are in an eligible property can apply for a Residents Permit. Some properties where previous single dwellings have been converted into flats may not be eligible due to planning restrictions.
The maximum allocation of permits per household is 3. This can be made up of either 1 resident (vehicle specific) and 2 visitor permits or 2 resident (vehicle specific) and 1 visitor permits.
Resident and their Visitor permits are valid for 2 years and are currently free of charge.

Student Permits
Student permits are available to tenants residing at a property within a scheme area whilst they are studying. Some properties where previous single dwellings have been converted into flats may not be eligible due to planning restrictions.
The maximum allocation of student permits per household is 3. This is made up of 2 student (vehicle specific) and 1 visitor permits.
Student and their Visitor permits are valid for 1 year and are currently free of charge.

Business Permits
Business permits are available to people conducting business at premises located within Residential Parking Schemes areas.
The maximum allocation of permits per business is 2. This can be made up of 1 business and 1 visitor permits or 2 visitor permits.
Business permits are valid for 1 year and are currently free of charge.

Dispensation Permits
These have been specifically introduced for Official Visitors (Health & Social Workers) and contractors where there is a necessity to visit or carry out work at properties within a Residential Parking Scheme area. A charge of £25 is made for these permits.
This permit is not available to private individuals or for commuting purposes.
