The Greater Nottingham Economic Review 2008
The Greater Nottingham Economic Review is produced by the Policy and Information Team in the City's Environment and Regeneration Department. The Review contains information about the local economy, such as key employment sectors, the supply of labour, workforce qualifications, communications and quality of life.
Greater Nottingham is defined as the area covered by the Greater Nottingham Partnership, i.e. the City of Nottingham, the districts of Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe, and the Hucknall area of Ashfield district. Greater Nottingham is used because it is a good approximation of the local labour market and the potential market for businesses.
The Review is available in a high resolution and low resolution yersion. The high resolution version is of higher quality but the low resolution version is easier and quicker to download and print.

Workplace jobs (2006 Annual Business Inquiry)
The Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) is the most comprehensive source of workplace data available. It includes all organisations except the very small and some charities. It does not include the self-employed.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) survey larger companies annually, and smaller companies less frequently on a rolling basis. Organisations provide information on their structures and numbers of employees, and this is used by ONS to estimate jobs figures at a local level.
The latest official estimates from the ABI show there are 296,400 workplace jobs based in Greater Nottingham and 182,400 of these are located within the City. The numbers of self-employed working in Greater Nottingham exceeds 37,500. (Taken from the Annual Population Survey Workplace Analysis September 2006).
Further information on Greater Nottingham jobs by industry sector is available below.
Greater Nottingham Jobs Report
Errors can occur in the ABI because it is a survey. Whilst the results have become more reliable in recent years, the City Council has concerns about the results in the mid- to late-90s. Also, the ABI 2006 appears to have missed between 6,000 and 7,000 jobs from Nottingham City and Greater Nottingham Further details on issues with the historical dataset are available from the Policy and Information Team.

Output and productivity (2004 Gross Value Added)
There are a number of ways to measure economic activity. Gross Value Added (GVA) is one such measure that puts a value on the output of goods and services in a year. Productivity can be measured using per capita GVA, calculated by dividing workplace GVA by the resident population. This also enables activity of areas of different sizes to be compared.
GVA is calculated in a similar way to GDP, but has the advantage of being available at a sub-regional level.
In 2004 the GVA of Greater Nottingham (excluding Hucknall) exceeded £10.7 billlion, an increase of nearly 37.4% since 1999 (including inflation). Per capita GVA exceeded £17,700, higher than the UK average. More recent figures for the East Midlands indicate a continued good performance.
