A
major multi-agency
advance in the battle against crime and anti-social behaviour in Nottingham is underway.
A
comprehensive package of measures – going under the banner of Safe in Nottingham – will target a wide
range of problems, from the most serious and violent crime to niggling nuisance behaviour that spoils
the quality of life for the law-abiding majority of people in the city.
Safe
In Nottingham’s six key initiatives are:
- The launch of
a hotspot tasking
group, involving a weekly meeting of senior figures from Nottingham City Council, Nottingham City Police
Division and partner organisations to assess the latest intelligence on crime and anti-social behaviour
patterns and ‘hotspots’. They will have the capability to pinpoint problems down to street level and
decide how best to tackle them.
- Police foot
patrols
in Nottingham city centre at night as well as during the day to deter drink-fuelled disorder. The initiative
will be complemented by the presence of marshals at taxi ranks, enforcement of the existing ban on street
drinking in the city centre and enforcement of pub and club licensing conditions.
- Increasing
the capacity of the Sherwood Project, a Nottinghamshire-wide multi-agency project that tracks drug-using
prolific and persistent offenders and which recently emerged the overall winner of
the Government’s 2005 Justice Awards. An extra six workers will be recruited to enable the project –
which has already cut the re-offending rates of participants by up to 55% - to expand and work with
up to 50 more offenders living in Nottingham.
- Rolling
out Neighbourhood Policing across Nottingham. This aims to establish dedicated teams of police officers,
police community support officers, wardens and special constables who are well-known and accessible
to local people, and enable local communities to have a greater say in local policing matters. It’s
hoped two pilots in Broxtowe and St Ann’s, will lead to Neighbourhood Policing being extended to other
areas in Nottingham.
- A major expansion of
operations
to combat street drug dealing by arresting and providing an overt deterrent to dealers. In its first
six months of operation, the police drug offences team made more than 100 arrests and helped to close
six crack houses. The initiative will be extended to cover The Meadows, Radford and Hyson Green with
a target of arresting or disrupting at least one dealer a day.
- An
awareness campaign to highlight the penalties for riding mini-motos, go-peds and other untaxed and unlicensed
vehicles in public areas using leaflets, posters and other publicity. The aim is to reduce the nuisance
and danger caused by irresponsible riders, and the campaign will be supported by enforcement activity
against offenders, advice to retailers and lobbying for tougher legislation in relation to the sale
and use of mini-motos.
