A new pet fostering project has been set
up, to enable women and children who go into refuge leaving a domestic violence situation to leave their
pets with someone safe. When they are re-housed they will have their pets back from the pet fosterer.
All food and vets bills will be paid for by the project.
Perpetrators of domestic
violence often use pets to prevent women and children leaving and threaten to kill or harm animals,
this is particularly upsetting for children and young people. Refuges and homeless projects are unable
to take animals with the women and children.
The project launched in February
2008,
they have already had several dogs and cats referred and don't have enough pet fosterers.
