Domestic violence is the use or threat of physical, sexual, emotional or other forms
of behaviour that frighten, hurt or injure -
- by one person (usually, but not always, a man)
- to another person (usually, but not always, a woman)
- with whom they have or had an intimate or other similar close relationship or with whom
they had children in order to exert power and control over that person
Groups
of people who may experience domestic violence are women and men, elders and children, including people
in same sex relationships. Individuals from these groups may also perpetrate domestic violence. Domestic
violence frequently co-exists with abuse towards children, vulnerable adults and animals.
The perpetrators of domestic violence or abuse are usually men and the victims or
survivors are usually women and children that they know.
If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please do not suffer
alone. Help IS available from a number of agencies operating within the City - see
the link below.
Leaflets explaining how we can help you are available from all housing
