Community
Protection is an innovative and dynamic service developed in partnership to take an uncompromising stance
to anti-social behaviour and low-level crime in Nottingham.
The service has
over 100 Community Protection Officers who provide high visibility patrols throughout our city to deter
criminal and anti-social activity that has a direct effect on the environment and to help make Nottingham
a safer, cleaner place. Using enforcement powers devolved by Nottinghamshire police, Community Protection
Officers (CPOs) are an integral part of the communities they serve, dealing with local issues at a local
level.
As one of the four tactical directorates of Nottinghamshire Police’s
City
Division, we are funded by Nottingham City council in partnership with Nottingham City Homes and Nottinghamshire
Fire Service to protect our communities from harm.
Areas
of crime and anti-social
behaviour are identified at weekly city tasking meetings, co-chaired by the Council and the Police to
enable all agencies to look at a range of responses to deal with the issues identified. A Rapid
Response Unit are tasked on a hot spot basis, ready to move to an area of Nottingham to crackdown on
behaviour blighting the lives of residents.
Community Protection Officers,
Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers work in dedicated Safer Neighbourhood Teams, developing
links with their communities to build trust and support.
Individuals who are
identified as persistent offenders are referred to Community Protections Anti-social Behaviour Officers
who use civil enforcement tools such as ASBOs, Injunctions and possession orders to crack down and control
anti-social and criminal behaviour. Community Protection has received national recognition for its innovative
use of civil orders in dealing with criminal activity.
The
confidential anti-social behaviour help line, available 24 hours a day for Nottingham City residents,
is there to deal with a wide range of anti-social behaviour issues such fly tipping, graffiti, vandalism,
fireworks, joy riding, quad bikes, abandoned cars etc. Officers are dispatched to deal with the issue
or customers are signposted to the relevant agency to solve their problem.
