Nottingham Contemporary Arts Centre

Artists impression of the new Arts CentreA key cultural resource for Nottingham and the East Midlands

Nottingham Contemporary will be a new centre for contemporary art of international standing with facilities to match. It will promote excellence and innovation through a diverse programme of exhibitions and other art projects, accompanied by ambitious, multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches to education for participants of diverse backgrounds and levels of experience. Nottingham Contemporary aims to connect the local with the international: it will be an important cultural and social resource for people in Nottingham and the East Midlands and will draw visitors from elsewhere in the UK and overseas. Nottingham Contemporary aims to be a space where things can be thought differently.

Nottingham Contemporary will move into a new landmark building in the centre of Nottingham in the Lace Market area designed by award winning architects Caruso St John. The £13.9M building is funded from a variety of sources, with substantial support from Arts Council of England, GOEM and EMDA, alongside Nottingham City Council, private individuals, trusts and companies, and from regional development partners GNP. It is now in the early stages of construction and will open to the public in Spring 2009. Nottingham Contemporary will be one of the largest venues for temporary exhibitions of contemporary art in the UK, with an overall size of 3,000 square metres including over square metres of exhibition and performance space, as well as two education spaces, a restaurant, bar and shop.

The opening of the building will be preceded by a year-long programme of off-site exhibitions, projects and education initiatives, that will look to embed the organisation in the various cultural and historical facets of Nottingham, news of which will follow shortly

Nottingham Contemporary is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. The Director took up his post in April 2007 and the senior management team will be in post at the end of the year. Nottingham Contemporary is managed by a non-executive Board of Directors who meet approximately nine times each year and are responsible for the overall management of the organisation. Nottingham Contemporary is a major client of Arts Council East Midlands and of Nottingham City Council, and will receive funding from other sources and from earned income for its operation.
