George
Africanus was the first black person who lived in Nottingham whose name and story we know. He was born
in Sierra Leone and brought to England as a slave at the age of 3. By the time he died he was a successful
businessman, property owner and prominent citizen of Nottingham.
The exhibition covers the life of George Africanus from his birth in 1763 to his death in 1834. It examines both his working and private life and the age of slavery in which he lived.
Two copies of the display are being produced, so that one copy will be available for schools and community groups to borrow and display. Anyone who would like to borrow the exhibition can ring 0115 9153602 or e-mail: mariae@ncmg.org.uk.
Over the anniversary weekend, March 24 and 25, one copy of the exhibition will be at the Council House and the other at St Mary's Church, Lace Market. The exhibition will be on display at the Museum of Nottingham Life at Brewhouse Yard during October and November this year alongside objects from the museum's African collections.
