Over 200 years ago, the Theatre Royal was envisaged by two Nottingham lace dressers,
as a 'temple of drama'...a place of "innocent recreation and of moral and intellectual culture".
In 1865, after six months of building and at a cost of £15,000, the new Theatre Royal was completed,
and the Classic facade and Corinthian columns still dominate Nottingham's city centre skyline. In 1969
the Theatre was purchased by Nottingham City Council, who set about restoring it to its former glory,
as you see it today. Construction of the Royal Concert Hall began in 1980 on the site of the old Empire
Theatre of Varieties, and was completed in 1982, providing Nottingham with not one but two top class
venues in one.
The Royal Centre is regarded today as one of the best touring venues in the country,
attracting major touring dramas, opera, ballet, West End musicals and panto. Two venues, two stages,
bringing to Nottingham the very best in entertainment.
And there is more to the Royal Centre than may meet the eye - as well as being one
of the East Midlands' biggest Arts venues, with a diverse range of shows and attractions to cater for
every taste; we also have strong links with business, education and community. We boast some superb
places to eat and drink, and act as a venue for events both personal and corporate
