Nottingham City Residency Requirements

What is a residency requirement?

A residency requirement is something that requires people to live in a certain area. In this case it requires applicants for most entry level jobs e.g. Clerical Assistants, Cleaners, Cooks, Gardeners, School Crossing Patrol staff etc to live within the Nottingham City boundary.

Why we have a residency requirement

Nottingham City Council wants to have a workforce that reflects the community it serves and is keen to ensure that those living in the City are able to take advantage of the job opportunities we have.

We have a residency requirement for most entry-level jobs and traineeships / apprenticeships. This is because many areas of Nottingham have high levels of unemployment and although people in the City have the skills needed to do the jobs when vacancies are opened up more widely they often miss out.

What posts have a residency requirement?

It will be stated in the job advert and on other recruitment paperwork but basically most entry level posts, traineeships and apprenticeships will only be open to Nottingham City residents.

If we are unable to recruit then we may re advertise the post without the residency requirement.

Some entry level posts e.g. Care Assistants and Home Care Workers, Rehabilitation Assistant & Student Environmental health Officers are exempt from the Residency Requirement because we know these are hard to fill posts.

Entry level posts outside the City boundary e.g. at Newstead Abbey are also automatically exempt.

Please Note that the Residency Requirement does not apply to disabled applicant or to young people connected to the Council's Leaving Care Team or Looked After Team. This means that people in these categories can apply for jobs with a Residency Requirement but they will have to ring 0115 9156555 or email to jobs@nottinghamcity.gov.uk to request a form stating why they are exempt.

Who is a Nottingham City resident?

A Nottingham City resident is someone who lives within the boundary of Nottingham City Council

If you are not familiar with the boundaries then the easiest tests are:

  • Does your household / Landlord pay Council Tax to Nottingham City Council? If so then you can apply for a post with a residency requirement.

  • Is your main wheelie bin (not your recycling/compost bin) green?
If so then you can apply for a post with a residency requirement.

If you are appointed you may have to provide proof that you live in the City (e.g. a council tax bill, Housing Benefit letter, inclusion on Electoral Register) – if you are unable to do this then the offer of employment could be withdrawn.
