Housing Strategy 2008-11

This Housing Strategy will help shape City housing and planning policies for the next three years. It looks at the abundance of city centre apartments, the need for larger homes so that growing families can stay in the city, the provision of decent homes for city council tenants, how to ensure owner occupied and private rented accommodation is safe and in a good condition and how to deal with empty, derelict properties that blight streets.

It considers the needs of people in the city trying to escape from domestic violence, prostitution or homelessness, or suffering from disabilities and poor health. It looks at how a range of good quality housing can help transform neighbourhoods into attractive, strong communities, how all homes in the city can be made more energy efficient and how they could be adapted more easily or be fitted with aids, so that people can remain in their own homes and localities as they get older, even if they become infirm.

Councillor Alan Clark, Nottingham City Council's Portfolio holder for Neighbourhood Regeneration, said: "This Housing Strategy sets out our ambition for the next three years. Many of the priorities and objectives are already on-going. The strategy looks at how they can be developed and how we can influence further the development and variety of housing in Nottingham so that all our residents, young people, older people, families and those suffering short term or long term personal problems or difficulties, have the homes they need at the point in their lives when they need it.

"The proposals will help secure a wider availability of quality, affordable, decent homes in mixed communities where people will choose to live. The City Council has worked with developers, homeowners, tenants, residents, landlords and other partners, including voluntary organisations, to develop the strategy that will address the lack of balance in the housing market because the choice of decent, available and affordable housing has a vital role in building community cohesion and strong neighbourhoods.

Please note: The final local sign off of the Local Area Agreement (LAA) is scheduled for the 30th May. The LAA will then be submitted to government. The LAA targets detailed in the 'Housing Strategy for Nottingham City 2008-11' are therefore subject to final Ministerial agreement which should happen in June 2008. Any changes made to the LAA targets will be reflected in the Housing Strategy 2008-11.
