The Homelessness Prevention Gateway is a new service which has radically changed the way in which vulnerable homeless people access accommodation and support services in Nottingham. The service was first launched in April 2007 as a new means of accessing direct access homelessness services in Nottingham. Following this, access to specialist accommodation services was introduced into the Gateway system of assessment and referral in October 2007, and finally access to Domestic Violence services was also added in April 2008.
The Gateway is based at Housing Aid, but its services will be capable of being delivered from more than just one location.
Overall the Gateway is designed to make it far easier for homeless people to access accommodation services and to rationalise the at times haphazard referral systems which currently exist. A key feature of the Gateway is the development of a common assessment tool, wherby a person accessing temporary accommodation and other housing related support is only required to undergo one assessment. This has been designed to benefit service users by preventing the need for repeated assessments when moving between services.
Gateway Phase 1 Performance Evaluation
An evaluation of the performance of the Homelessness Gateway in managing access to phase 1 (generic temporary accommodation) services is now available. Please click on the link below to download a copy of the evaluation:
The evaluation looks specifically at access into generic temporary accommodation services through assessment and referral by the Homelessness Prevention Gateway, introduced in phase 1 of the Gateway project.
A full evaluation of the Gateway, to include access to specialist services introduced in phases 2 & 3, is due to commence in October 2008 with a report expected in January 2009.

Gateway Consultation
Consultation questionnaires were sent to over 250 organisations in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire to consult with stakeholders on the development of the Homelessness Prevention Gateway. A consultation event was also held on the 10th November 2006 and attended by almost 100 stakeholders.
Delegates at the event were given the opportunity to feed back as part of facilitated groups on progress made in developing the Gateway project design, the Reconnection Protocol and Common Needs Assessment form. An open Q & A session was also held to allow stakeholders to ask questions on any other aspect of the Gateway to key people involved in its development.
Please click below to download a summary of all the feedback received and a list of answers to commonly asked questions about the Gateway.
If you have other questions about the Gateway, or seek clarification on any of the proposals, please email your questions to the Housing Support Strategy team at hs.strategy@nottinghamcity.gov.uk. We will try to answer them all and display the responses on this page for others to see. We will not display the name or email address of the sender.
