Preventing eviction

It is important that tenants use the checklist provided with the application form to ensure that the claim is made with all the supporting evidence.

Where your tenant has requested payment is made direct to you, you will receive notification of any entitlement and how this will be paid.

If you have tenant whose arrears are accruing and you know that they have submitted a claim for Housing Benefit please contact the Housing Benefit service with details.

Please enquire before you take action against the tenant, the LA may be able to help sustain the tenancy and pay Housing Benefit to reduce the arrears.

You can also remind your tenant that they must:

  • provide all the information and evidence required for the claim form; and
  • respond within the specified timescales to any letters received from the Housing Benefit Service.

This provides the opportunity to try and solve the problem and pay Housing Benefit before the situation becomes any more serious and threatens the tenancy.

You can call the Benefit Enquiry Line on 0115 915 4944

You can visit the Enquiry Counter or advise your tenants to visit
