The Local Authority can pay additional money to increase Housing Benefit awards
in exceptional circumstances. This is called “Discretionary Housing Payment” (DHP) The DHP can be awarded
for a short period in order to allow the benefit claimant time to find alternative, cheaper accommodation.
DHP is paid from a limited, fixed Government fund and as such is only awarded to
claimants who can demonstrate they meet the criteria.
The criteria is established by the completion of an Income & Expenditure form,
which is supported with proofs that include things such as debts, special requirements based on medical
need etc. Claimants can obtain a form by contacting the Housing Benefit office on (0115) 9154944
