Discretionary Housing Payments

The Local Authority can pay additional money to increase Housing Benefit awards in exceptional circumstances. This is called “Discretionary Housing Payment” (DHP) The DHP can be awarded for a short period in order to allow the benefit claimant time to find alternative, cheaper accommodation.

DHP is paid from a limited, fixed Government fund and as such is only awarded to claimants who can demonstrate they meet the criteria.

The criteria is established by the completion of an Income & Expenditure form, which is supported with proofs that include things such as debts, special requirements based on medical need etc. Claimants can obtain a form by contacting the Housing Benefit office on (0115) 9154944
