Preventative Adaptations For Older People

picture of second handrail being fitted to a stairway to make going upstairs easier

Many older people experience difficulties in their own home associated with ageing. If you are aged 60 or over, minor adaptations in the home can frequently reduce the risk of falls and could improve your self-confidence to remain at home.

The following apply to this scheme:

  • you must be aged 60 or over
  • the scheme is designed to increase safety in your home, reduce falls and facilitate timely discharge from hospital
  • all minor adaptations under the scheme are free
(if you require a Lifeline, please refer to our web page on the Care Alarm Monitoring Service)

Examples include:

  • grab/stair rails
  • half step
  • chair risers
  • lever tap adaptors
  • smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors

To make an application:

If you want to apply for the PAD scheme, please contact the Occupational Therapy Service on 915 0439/40. They will then complete an application over the telephone with you.

Alternatively: print off a form and complete it yourself, returning it to the address below - it's very easy to complete.

If possible, please specify details of where the work is required with measurements, eg 'additional stair rail - left hand ascending - approx 4 metres'. If you are referring someone to the scheme, please ensure they know that a referral is being made to minimise any distress caused by an unexpected visit. An assessment will then be made to determine the works that can be carried out.
