Day Services for Disabled People

Day Services for Disabled People

The Acorn Resource Centre

The Acorn Resource Centre provides day services for people with physical impairments including a day service for older people with physical impairments.

The centre is part of the Mary Potter Centre on Gregory Boulevard. It caters for up to 125 people per day and offers interesting and varied activities. The main centre caters for people aged 18 years and over.

Activities

Activities include craft, cookery, indoor games, discussion groups, education, outdoor activities, sports, flower arranging and much more. Social events include fun days, fairs, fundraising events, boat trips, summer schools, guest speakers, church services and Christmas activities.

Aims

We aim to offer a needs led service and during the first weeks at the centre an assessment is carried out with the full participation of the new service user. Each person will have a key worker to help orientate them to the unit and to ensure that they get the most out of their attendance. Please note that referral must be via a Social Worker or Occupational Therapist.

Close links are maintained with people's carers and support and advice is given where needed.

Our aim is to progress at the pace of the individual to work towards their goals and to foster as much independence as possible. Therefore we work very closely with other agencies such as the Independent Living Team, the Health Promotion Team, Community Physiotherapists and New College Nottingham Tutors.

Assistance with personal care is available and a comprehensive moving and handling plan is completed as needed. We are committed to a high standard of safety in our approach. Close relationships are maintained with the Continence Advisory Service to whom we can refer service users as necessary.

Transport

There is a charge of £2.50 per day for transport. The vehicles are provided by Social Services Transport section and are equipped with tail lifts and webbing systems to secure wheelchairs. Pick up times commence at 8.30a.m. Car parking is available for clients using their own transport. There is a service call facility.

Meals

Meals are available costing £2.60. We can accommodate a range of dietary needs. Various snacks are also available and there is a coffee bar ran by volunteers.

Client Led Committees

CAR (Council of Acorn Representatives) and ADAC (Acorn Day Centre Association) are client led committees with a voice for the client in the centre and the community. Service user participation in planning and activities is welcomed.
