Services for Older People

This information is meant for people in later life, whether or not they need any help from Nottingham City Council's Adult Services, Housing and Health department at the moment. It sets out briefly what services there are, how they work and who to get in touch with for more information.

Nottingham City Council Adult Services, Housing and Health aims:

  • to assist older people, wherever possible to live independently in their own homes;
  • to give practical help to those caring for older people – for example, family or friends;
  • to make available residential and nursing homes for older people who can no longer manage to live in their own homes;
  • to co-operate fully with other providers of services (e.g. family doctors, nurses, hospital staff, district councils, voluntary organisations) so that older people get the best quality care that resources allow and the widest possible range of services.

How to get help

The first point of contact for most older people is an Assessment and Care Management Team, madeup of social workers and other staff. Their job is to assess the needs of people referred to them, to see what can be done to help and to arrange appropriate services.

Anyone can make a referral to Adult Services. A lot of people refer themselves, but many are referred by their doctor, the hospital, family, friends and neighbours. Every referral is dealt with in the strictest confidence and we would normally expect the person being referred to know about this and agree to it.
