Climate change comes to Nottingham
Nottingham
is to host the National Climate Change Conference at the National College for School Leadership
on Monday 5th December 2005.
- The
first national conference in 2000 produced the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. Almost 100
local authorities have already signed up to it. A revised and updated Declaration will be presented
at Monday’s event, together with a five-point five-year plan.
- The
plan aims to double the number of councils publicly committed to tackling climate change within a year
(and double it again by 2008); to launch a Climate Action Pack; to monitor progress and publish results;
to introduce a self-assessment benchmark for councils and to reconvene in 2010 to push for further improvements.
- Nottingham
City Council has reduced CO2 emissions from its own buildings by 31,850 tonnes over the five years since
the first Climate Change Conference, through investment in energy efficiency measures and through buying
an increasing proportion of renewable energy. The city is listed on www.greenprices.com
as the EU’s
16th-largest user of renewable energy.
- The conference is due to open
at 10 am and close at 4.30 pm. Media will be very welcome. Full details
