Action on recycling

Recycling in Nottingham

2008 promises to be an exciting year for Nottingham’s recycling services. By working with you the Council has expanded recycling collections to 73,000 properties in the City. This means that it is now easier for people to recycle as part of their normal waste collection service. In 2008 we aim to included a further 23,000 households in the recycling collections service as well as increase the types of products we collect for recycling. Below are some comments from residents who use the recycling scheme:

I live in a multi occupancy property in Sherwood and was introduced onto the 3 bin recycling scheme in August 2006.  At first I had my reservations as house management (e.g. tidying, washing up) within multi occupancy houses can be a real issue… but I couldn’t have been more wrong.  When we received the recycling leaflet all was made clear – we were still going to receive a bin collection every week as we used to but the only difference is that one week it would be recycling and the following was for household waste.

I was amazed by the reduction in the green bin waste and was not having to put out any extra bin bags.  All that was needed was for us to take responsibility of our own rubbish, which was to simply place the recyclables (which are listed on the recycling leaflet which I have stuck onto my kitchen bin for convenience) into a separate bin.  Now that I’ve been on the scheme almost a year the process has become second nature and I do it without thinking.

I am very grateful to my council for introducing kerb-side recycling and I fully appreciate that if we all work together, towards one goal then society can become less wasteful and have a more self sustainable nation.

Our Grey Lid Bin is so full on collection day that we have to bash it down with a skateboard to smoosh everything down and we have to tear up the paper and cardboard into little bits so we can get more in.

It was absolutely amazing – I could believe how much can actually be recycled. My grey lid bin is full within a week and my green bin is only ever half full. We have lots of pets but still don’t have any problems.

I reserved judgement before going on the scheme as I heard that some people had difficulty managing alternate weekly collections – but I can’t understand how anyone could. We have even started taking our glass to the recycling sites. My neighbours are the same we have all really got into recycling.

The scheme is working very well in all areas I collect from; it’s been two months and I’ve only had one complaint. Lots of resident are crying out for more recycling. Every grey lid bin is chocca, with very little contamination. I still see some people who are not participating fully and I notice a lot of recycling in their green bins – I think people don’t realise that they can have extra grey lid bin for the recycling.
