Litter
There is no precise definition of litter. It can mean anything from a crisp packet to a sack of rubbish or discarded food. It is a criminal offence and you can be fined up to £2,500 for littering.
Fixed Penalty Notices for littering can be issued by Community Protection Officers and many non uniformed employees of Nottingham City Council. We operate a zero tolerance policy for littering and if you are therefore observed depositing litter, you will be issued with an on the spot Fixed Penalty Notice for £75.00
The most commonly-found litter is cigarette ends, followed by sweet and food wrappers. Litter looks messy, can be dangerous and brings a neighbourhood down. It can take a long time to disappear naturally – for example a plastic bags takes between 10–20 years to decompose, a cigarette butts up to 2 years as does a banana skin.
