Street Scene has launched a new scheme offering free tool hire and training to community groups who want to help transform their neighbourhoods.

Building a Hanging Basket

Many groups across the city are already involved in creating community gardens and similar schemes to make their area a greener place to live.  Others are keen to join in, and this scheme will give them a helping hand to get started.

Training courses for groups are available on a variety of topics including making hanging baskets, composting, and nature conservation.  These courses will be run by a qualified horticultural trainer at the Training House at Woodthorpe Park, near the Nottingham City Council nursery.

Community Group - Completed Hanging Baskets

Under the scheme - known as the Neighbourhood Tool Train - community groups (within the city boundary) can also borrow tools, including forks, spades, wheelbarrows, watering cans and secateurs.  There are also tools suitable for people with disabilities.

The scheme was launched in April as part of the Big Spring Clean campaign and now continually aimes to demonstrate what can be achieved when schools, businesses, students and the local community come together with the joined aim of making the city a cleaner place for everyone.

Scout Troop - Using the Tool Train

John Robinson, Nottingham City Council Service Director for Street Scene, says "The Neighbourhood Tool Train is an original idea to help local people get active in improving the area in which they live.  Sometimes groups have a spark of an idea but don't have rescources to take it any further.  This scheme helps with tools and training and also offers the possibility of support from the Neighbourhood Environmental Action Teams and our apprentice gardeners."

If you belong to a community group or association and would like to use this facility there is one condition - we will need some evidence of the activity - then apply using the email address or postal address below stating the date of the event, the location, and attach or send a photo of the activity.
