Waste Management Services

Background to our service

  • We empty 7.7 million bins every year
  • In 2006 it cost each household 68p to have their bins emptied each week
  • We collect just under 160,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year
  • 23,790 tonnes of waste were recycled in 2005/6.
  • We carry out 30,000 bulky waste collections each year
  • The Council has 140 ‘Bring Sites’ across the city where you can take your waste to be recycled

Service Pledges

1. If we miss your collection, (assuming that you have put your bin out and recycled appropriately), we will return within twenty-four hours to sort out the issue.

2. We will offer an appointment within 15 working days if you request a collection of bulky waste and we will stick to this appointment.

3. Bins will be put back in front of your property or to where you left them, depending on local circumstances and we will clean up any rubbish we spill.

4. Staff will carry an identify card and wear a uniform.

5. For people who cannot physically manage to put out their bins and have no one in their home to do this, we will provide an assisted ‘pull out’ scheme.

6. If your bin is broken or missing we will provide you with a replacement or repair it within five working days of your call.

Recycling in Nottingham

There is a big change happening in Nottingham's recycling service, as the kerb side collection of waste is being expanded into new areas across the city.

Nottingham City Council is on target to reach a recycling rate of 21% in 2006/2007. This has been due to success of a number of schemes and with your help and participation we can go even higher. In 2002/03 our recycling rate was 5.26% that means we have more than tripled our recycling rate in just three years!
