Recycling glass

Why recycle glass?

Reduces waste - 9% of household waste is glass.

Saves energy - less energy is required to melt cullet than convert raw material to glass.

Saves raw materials - one tonne of recycled glass eliminates the need for 1.2 tonnes of raw materials.

Recycling your glass

  • To make recycling simpler, please wash out all bottles and jars
  • Remove all jar and bottle tops
  • Glass bottles and jars must be separated into clear, amber and green for recycling.
  • Blue bottles can be recycled with green glass.

Ten tips on recycling your glass

  1. Always take refillable bottles, with or without a deposit, back to the supplier. Never put milk bottles in a glass recycling bank. Always return them to the milkman or point of purchase.

  2. Before putting glass into glass banks, empty and rinse the containers and remove any bottle caps or corks.

  3. At the glass bank, separate clear, brown, green and blue glass and place them in the appropriate glass banks. The blue bottles should be placed into the green glass bank.

  4. Only deposit glass containers such as bottles and jars. Containers that hold food, pharmaceutical and household items, and are packaged in glass, are all recyclable as well as beer, wine and spirit and soft drink bottles.

  5. Never deposit window glass, light bulbs, Pyrex (or Vision ware) cooking dishes or glass crockery items in the glass banks.

  6. If a bottle is decorated i.e coated with printing inks, paints or a plastic sleeve, look at the top where the cap has been to see what colour the glass is, to determine in which glass bank it should be placed.

  7. Try to plan your trip to the glass bank along with other essential errands such as shopping.

  8. Don’t leave cardboard boxes or plastic carrier bags that have been used to bring the glass to the glass banks, unless there is a bin for these materials on site.

  9. Never go to the glass bank late at night as your visit may disturb local residents.

  10. If you find your glass bank is full, please try again another day.
