Batteries:
Cardboard:
Recycle

Carrier Bags:
- Reduce – avoid taking them, take your own bag when you go shopping or buy
a bag for life and reuse it.
- Reuse – scrunched up
instead of bubble wrap, for lunches, for freezing, for shopping or for bin liners.
- Recycle
– some supermarkets have collection point for plastic bag collection points.We are hoping to soon expand
the materails we can collect in the grey lid bin to accept plastic carrier bags - we will inform resident
if we make any changes.
CD and DVDs:
- Reuse – hang in the garden as bird scares, cut up and stick to a ball to
make a disco ball, donate to charity shops, use as a coaster.
- Recycle
– residents on the brown bin scheme can put them in the grey-lidded bin. You can
take them to Redfield Road.
Christmas
waste:
- Trees and cards: try to reduce you waste at Christmas – buy a planted tree
or an artificial tree. Reuse cards buy making them into present tags for next year. Recycling – Small
Christmas tree can go in the Brown bin for garden waste, otherwise take them to
a Household Waste Recycling Site.
- Christmas
Cards can go into the grey-lidded bin for residents on the brown bin scheme. If

Computers:
Donate any old computers go to www.computeraid.org or
www.recycle-it.ltd.uk.
Electronic Appliances:
- Reduce – use wind up or solar powered appliances.
- Reuse
– repair and fix broken items. Donate any unwanted items to charity shops.
- Recycle
– The WEEE regulations state the safe disposal of many electronic items are the producers responsibility.

Envelopes:
- Reuse – stick on reusable labels.
- Recycle – envelopes
can be composted at home. Residents on the Brown bin scheme can put them on in the
grey lid bin.
Fluorescent light tubes:
Recycle - can be taken to our household waste recycling centres.

Food and drink cans:
Recycle – residents on the brown bin scheme can put their metal cans in the grey-lidded
bin. Other residents can take them to their local recycling site. Find out more at www.recycle-more.co.uk
Food waste:
Reduce – try to minimise your food waste, incorporate leftovers into other meals.
Most fruit and veg can be kept for weeks – months even - in the right conditions, (In the cool and out
of light).

Furniture:
Sell or donate old unwanted furniture – contact Family First for information about

Glass bottles:
- Reuse – you can reuse glass jars buy washing them out.
- Recycling
– you can take glass to your local recycling site. To find your nearest site go to www.recycle-more.co.uk.
Glasses
(spectacles):
Reuse – take them to boots or other spectacle retailers for use in the third world.

Green waste/garden waste:
Recycle - you can compost your garden waste at home, for information on how to get

Junk Mail:
Reduce – You can stop junk mail by going to www.mps-online.org.uk
Avoid signing up for unneeded catalogues and mailing lists. Any junk mail can be recycled in the grey
lid bin or blue bag depending on which scheme you are.
Mobile Phones:
- Reuse – donate them to charity or take them back to retailers.
- Recycle
– Tesco run a scheme for every phone that is recycled £2.50 is donated to Alzheimer’s Dementia Care
and Research. Ask at your nearest Tesco Store for further details. You can now take mobile phones to
our household Waste Recycling Sites.
Nappies:
Eight million nappies are thrown away every day and each child uses a total of 5,850
nappies in his or her lifetime.
Reusable nappies – nappies have come a long way since the old terry toweling one.

Newspapers:
- Reuse – newspaper can be used for all kinds of things – lining pets cages,
protecting floors from paint, arts and crafts and they make great barriers mulch to suppress weeds.
- Recycling – nearly all residents in the city council
should receive a collection that can take newspapers for recycling, if you are on the brown
bin scheme you can put newspaper in the grey lid bin and if you are on the blue
bag scheme you can put newspapers out for collection in your blue bag. For more details contact

Packing:
- Reduce – try to avoid over packaged goods.
- Reuse – bags,
glass jars, plastic tubes can all be reuse for storage containers.
- Recycle – paper
