Planning Policy

Planning is about how we plan for, and make decisions about, the future of our cities, towns and countryside.

The planning system in England is “plan led” which means that plans are prepared to set out what can be built and where. These plans are then used to determine planning applications for the defined life of the planning document. Follow this link for more information on the plan-led system.

Local Plan

The Nottingham Local Plan (November 2005) was produced as part of the 'old' planning system and will be 'saved' until it is replaced by the Local Development Framework (LDF) under the 'new' planning system arrangements.

Local Development Framework

Following changes to the planning system in 2004, all local planning authorities are now required to prepare a Local Development Framework (LDF). This will contain all the planning policies and proposals for the City, against which decisions on planning applications will be made.

Waste Planning

The Nottinghamshire and Nottingham Waste Local Plan (January 2002) was produced as part of the 'old' planning system and is currently 'saved'. Following changes to the planning system in 2004, all waste planning authorities are now required to prepare a Waste Development Framework. This will contain the planning policies against which planning applications for waste development will be made.

Supplementary Planning

The Supplementary Planning page provides additional detail to the policies contained in the Nottingham Local Plan 2005 or Development Plan Documents in the LDF. They are a 'material' consideration when planning applications are decided.
