Scores on the Doors

The Food and Licensing Team has introduced a scheme known as Scores on the Doors through which all food businesses inspected by officers from Environmental Health are given a score on how well they have performed in terms of;

  1. Hygiene,
  2. Structural Conditions,
  3. Attitude of The Management Towards Complying With The Law.

The aim of the scheme is to inform consumers of how well businesses comply with hygiene standards in the City and so give an informed choice about where to eat based on food safety performance.  Increased awareness of hygiene standards will encourage businesses to improve or maintain higher standards.

The performance of a food business is shown through a simple Star Rating score for each of the three categories above.

Businesses performing to a high standard will receive the maximum Three Stars rating. Businesses with the poorest performance will be given a No Star rating.

There are approximately 2'700 food businesses in Nottingham City that are inspected for food hygiene.

The score reflects the conditions found at the time of the inspection and standards may have gone up or down since.

Details of The Scheme

   1.    The star rating score will be derived from data collected during Primary Inspections (as defined by Food Law Code of Practice and EC Regulation 882/2004) and any alternative enforcement arrangements. Each business will be assessed in accordance with Annexe 5 of the Food Law Code of Practice. Elements of this food safety score will be combined to give a Star Rating.

   2.    The Star Ratings are derived from the compliance scores given for Food Hygiene, Structure of the Premises and Confidence in Management.

   3.    Score bands for each element of the Star Rating will be as follows;

           Confidence in Management

  • 0-5 (3 Stars)
  • 10  (2 Stars)
  • 20  (1 Star)
  • 30  (No Stars)

           Compliance with Structural Legislation

  • 0-5 (3 Stars)
  • 10  (2 Stars)
  • 15-25 (1 Star)
  • 25  (No Stars)

           Compliance with Hygiene Legislation

  • 0-5 (3 Stars)
  • 10  (2 Stars)
  • 15-20 (1 Star)
  • 25  (No Stars)

   4.   Scoring will only be carried out at the time of a Primary Inspection and the Star Rating will be publicised on the website. No subsequent visits will be undertaken with the specific and sole aim of modifying the score. The score will stand until the next Primary Inspection is carried out.

   5.    Premises subject to approval under Regulation 853/2004 are excluded from the Inspection Rating Scheme/scores on the doors scheme and are dealt with separately.

   6.    Food Business Operators may appeal against the Star Rating score given at a Primary Inspection by discussion with the inspecting officer. If the matter cannot be resolved with the inspecting officer then the Food Business Operator may contact the Team Leader to review the case. The score will be reviewed within 21 days by assessment of the file records and discussion with the inspecting officer. The Star Rating will either be amended or the original score confirmed giving reasons for this decision.

   7.    The Food Business Operator can comment on the website entry for their premises by;

  • E-mail - click on the contact button situated on the web page
  • Telephoning 0115 9156778
  • Writing to, Team Leader - Food & Licensing, Lawrence House, Talbot St. Nottingham. NG1 5NT.

   8.    Newly registered businesses will be inspected within 3 months and a Star Rating publicised on the website as in 4 above.

   9.    Should the Food Standards Agency issue guidelines for a national Rating Scheme in the future then the Nottingham City scheme may be subject to change accordingly.
