Stray dogs

Stray dogs can cause many problems such as causing serious road accidents or biting a child.

Our dog wardens respond to complaints and patrol the area looking for strays. If a dog is picked up and it is wearing a collar and tag, providing it is the first occasion it has been picked up, it will be returned to the owner.

If the dog is picked up on a second occasion or is not wearing a collar and tag, it will be taken to one of our kennels.

The owner will then have to pay a charge, currently £25, together with kennelling and veterinary costs before the dog is returned. We will normally vaccinate all dogs before they are kennelled, this is also charged to the owner.

Any dogs picked up by the City Council dog wardens are returned free of charge to their homes on the first occasion of straying, providing they carry identification - a legal requirement for all dogs in public places.

Reporting a lost dog or stray

If you are reporting a lost dog or stray it will help us if you provide the following information:

  • Your name and telephone number
  • Description of the dog (breed, size, colour, distinctive features)
  • Where dog was last seen
  • Date and time dog went missing (in case of lost dogs)
  • Do you know the owner (in case of stray dogs)?

Did You Know?
Of the 400 dogs taken to shelter each year, 250 are never
reclaimed by their owners.

If you find a stray dog outside office hours you may take it to Central, Radford Road or Oxclose Lane Police Station who will normally take the dog from you on our behalf. We will then take them to our kennels as soon as we are able to. The Police do have limited spaces. To report a lost dog or stray, submit the online service request form.

How to Claim your dog back
To arrange the return of your dog you need to call at Lawrence House, Talbot Street, Nottingham between the hours of 8.30am and 4.50pm, Monday to Friday. A fee is payable. Some of our kennels involve a journey outside the City so if you call us later in the afternoon you may not be able to collect it until the next day, an additional day's charge will be made.
